Ways to Help Orhpans · January 21, 2007

The numbers of orphans in the world are staggering:

   5.5 million in Africa

   3.5 million in Asia

   1.5 million in Eastern Europe

135,000 waiting to be adopted in the U. S. Foster System

Millions of children around the world are waiting for Forever Families.  When we look at the numbers, they can be  overwhelming.  But, like the little boy who threw one starfish back in the ocean, he looked at his grandfather and said, “At least I saved that one.”  None of us can help all of the children, but we can make a difference in the life of a few.

I've decided to add a few links to organizations that help orphans.  These organizations are reputable and really do help.  A couple of these sites have plans where you can make a donation for a holiday (Mother's Day, Christmas, etc.) and they will send a card to the person you are honoring.  Half the Sky also and Love Without Boundaries have monthly plans, too.

The Smile Train

This one isn't just for orphans, but cleft babies (especially one) now hold a special place in our hearts. Unlike many charities that do many different things, The Smile Train is focused on solving a single problem: cleft lip and palate. Clefts are a major problem in developing countries where there are millions of children who are suffering with unrepaired clefts. Most cannot eat or speak properly. They aren't allowed to attend school or hold a job. They face very difficult lives filled with shame and isolation, pain and heartache. The good news is every single child with a cleft can be helped with surgery that costs as little as $250 and takes as little as 45 minutes.
